UK Creative Organisations Demand Transparency Around AI in Letter to Major Tech Firms

August 7, 2024 | 4:00am

Bodies representing the UK's directors, writers, and actors have written to major tech companies, including Google and Facebook, demanding greater transparency around the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in their platforms.

Call for Transparency and Responsibility

The letter calls for increased transparency over how tech companies train their AI systems and the data they use to do so. The signatories also express concern about the potential for AI to be used to manipulate or exploit users.

The letter concludes with a list of seven demands, including calls for:

  • Clear and accessible information about how AI is used in each company's products and services
  • Transparency about the data used to train AI systems
  • Measures to ensure AI is used ethically and responsibly

The signatories represent a wide range of UK creative industries, including illustrators, authors, photographers, and musicians. They argue that greater transparency around AI is essential to protect the rights of creators and ensure that AI is used for the benefit of society.

Global Calls for Transparency

The UK letter follows similar demands for transparency from creative organisations around the world. In a joint letter to Members of the European Parliament, a coalition of 13 organizations called for increased transparency and accountability in the development and use of AI.

The growing demand for transparency around AI reflects the increasing concerns about the potential risks and harms associated with this powerful technology. As AI continues to be integrated into more aspects of our lives, it is essential that we have a clear understanding of how it works and the potential consequences of its use.
